Mizo CM appears in court graft case

AIZAWL: Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Thursday appeared before a special court in a corruption case in which he is the main accused.

Other accused who were not present in court were directed to appear before it on October 12 by special judge T. Saikunga.

The graft case against the chief minister culminated in 1996 when two social workers – Rev Zairema and Bualhranga filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court asking seeking an order for investigating the allegations of corruption against Lal Thanhawla and then union minister Santosh Mohan Dev.

As directed by the apex court, the petitioners submitted FIR at the Aizawl Police Station the same year and the police submitted a chargesheet against the accused persons in 2003.
