Assam Congress out to break regional party unity in NE: MPA

SHILLONG: Disapproving the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) today accused the Congress unit in Assam of trying to break the unity among the regional parties in the Northeast.

“We have tried to forge a common forum of regional parties in the Northeast for better representation of the region at the Centre, but the Assam Congress is out to scuttle our efforts,” MPA secretary and NCP leader Conrad Sangma told a rally here.

Prayer for peace on Meitei New Year

IMPHAL: A prayer for peace was on most people’s mind as Meiteis celebrated Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba (New Year) today.

Wahengbam Raju Singh, a resident of Imphal West in Manipur, was so engrossed in praying for an end to “grenade explosions” and “killing of innocent people” that he forgot to pray for the welfare of his own family.

Meghalaya to join Earth Hour campaign today

SHILLONG: People throughout Meghalaya are likely to join tomorrow’s Earth Hour campaign, along with seventy four other countries, aimed at spreading awareness on reducing carbon footprints. All the participating countries, throughout the globe, will voluntarily keep their lights switched off for an hour to reduce the energy consumption.

Advani under fire for announcing autonomous state in Assam

GUWAHATI – The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani’s statement announcing an autonomous state to two ethnic communities in Assam if voted to power has raked up a blazing controversy with influential groups charging the party of trying to divide the state for political gains.
